When I became a caregiver for my mother, I had to learn the language of medicine, its terminology, tone, and how information is conveyed. Coming from a background in banking, clinical verbiage and abbreviations were unfamiliar to me, so I educated myself, asked precise questions, and translated discharge instructions, care plans, and notes into plain language. That focus on clarity and meaning led me into medical coding, where I could capture the clinical story accurately; then into auditing, to ensure documentation aligned with coverage and policy; into compliance, to build standards that reduce ambiguity and risk; and ultimately into provider education, helping clinicians document with clarity so care, coding, and coverage align. What began at my mother’s bedside still guides my work today: be the interpreter, the voice, and the problem solver.
