About Colin K.

Adventure. Environmental science. Public service. Travel. I wanted a career that brings all of these together – while still letting me have a family. I discovered the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps. The NOAA Corps provides much of the behind-the-scenes operational support of NOAA\'s maritime and aviation missions – from ocean exploration, updating nautical charts, conducting fishery surveys, and flying into hurricanes. With a marine biology background, I work on the sea-going side and leave the flying to my aviation colleagues. From a broader perspective, I enjoy being part of public service agencies whose missions heavily involve environmental resource management and protections. Of course, I care about people too. Our country is far more dependent on a healthy environment than many of us realize, so taking care of the environment means taking care of people, especially the generations that come after us. Topics such as sustainability, biodiversity, existence value, and resilient ecosystem services are of huge importance, and not just for the environment\'s own sake or for its aesthetics. Our security, socio-cultural heritages, and economic prosperity are intertwined with environmental issues in the most inconspicuous and complex ways – and whether we like it or not. It\'s my honor and privilege to serve my country, my generation, and future generations toward goals of national and international environmental reparation and sustainable stewardship.
