About Colin Haas
I’m someone who has always felt compelled to understand how any system works, how they can be replicated, and how the knowledge gained from both can be used to synthesize entirely new creations. From hacking together simple toys out of broken speaker parts as a young child to architecting and developing complete robotic systems in high school and college, my incessant compulsion to learn and create has been central to my life. My approach to learning skews autodidactic, aiming to teach myself whatever skill sets are required for my current project, even if it’s something far outside my field of expertise. That being said, I’m immeasurably grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to pursue this passion of mine through classical education as well — especially for the numerous robotics clubs and laboratories, which gave me a chance to work with some truly incredible people. I doubt I’d be where I am now without them. The development I’ve pursued, both personal and professional, has always centered around topics like robotics and sensor fusion, but my motivations have shifted over time. Engineering has consistently provided me an outlet for creating whatever amusing idea popped into my head, but over time I’ve come to appreciate it’s nuanced role in society. Technology has the potential to radically improve the lives of people around the world in unimaginable ways, but in absence of careful planning and ethics, technology can become instead a force for great harm. I want the things I create to exist because they make the world a better place, not just because of potential profits. Having a successful business is critical, but cash isn’t more important than human lives. Too many people forget that, and I aim to never be one of them.
