ABOUT COLIN A.
I serve on the faculty of the Departments of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. I’m also a founding faculty member of the Vanderbilt University Health Coaching Program. I’m a practicing Health, Rehabilitation & Performance Psychologist privileged to be in my 30th year at Vanderbilt helping clients with their emotional recovery from illness and injury, and helping high achievers perform at their best. I treat a wide variety of patients (e.g, cancer, recent injury, heart transplant). A passion of mine and my major focus is treating those suffering from Voice Disorders. These include folks suffering from muscle tension dysphonia, spasmodic dysphonia, as well as vocal fold polyps, nodules, and hemorrhages. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of California, San Diego with a specialization in Health Psychology. I then completed a 1-year Clinical Health Psychology Internship and a 2-year Postdoc in Clinical Health Psychology at Vanderbilt. After that, I stayed.I started working in the fields of Health and Performance Psychology in 1990. I’m published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, The American Journal of Health Promotion, The Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Perception and Motor Skills, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Psychology and Health, Global Advances in Health and Medicine, and The Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. I’ve also co-authored a book chapter on motivation theories and strategies.I’ve provided consultation and education on the topics of stress, anxiety, and worry management with such corporate clients as General Motors, The Tennessean, Baker Donelson, Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), AT & T, Marriott Corporation, Nashville Electric Service (NES), Logan\'s Roadhouse, Central Parking, Louisiana Pacific (LP), Whirlpool, Caterpillar, Genesco, Gaylord Entertainment, Ingram Industries, Ingram Entertainment, The GAP, Hertz, Deloitte & Touche, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, CMT/MTV Networks, and Bass, Berry & Sims.I’ve provided similar education to a large number of community organizations (e.g, Leadership Nashville, AARP, YMCA, YWCA, Rotary, American Cancer Society, The Girl Scouts, L.A.W, American Heart Association, American Lung Association) and government agencies (e.g, Metro Nashville Police Training Academy, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Metro Airport Authority, The Federal Reserve Bank, The IRS, and the National Security Agency). It all makes for an interesting and rewarding career.
