ABOUT COLIN MITCHELL
My compassion and empathy were honed from my earliest days, by both lived experience and family examples. I was raised in a small town where I lived a nice childhood. I learned about passion and service to others from my family. My dad was a volunteer coach and postal worker. My mom quit her job and went back to school to pursue her passion as an educator.My entire family was loving and supportive and, in many ways, it was wonderful. But inside, I was a lonely kid struggling with a truth that I felt I had to conceal. From a very early age, I knew I was gay. I felt different and at that time, it felt bad or wrong. I carried that weight with me for years.I didn’t come out until my second year of business school. Finally telling the truth about myself was the most cathartic experience of my life. Everything that I was afraid of as a kid living in the closet never came to be. My family accepts and loves me, as well as my husband, and I am closer to my parents now than I have ever been. I’ve always been an empathetic person but having to keep myself hidden for so long intensified that feeling. I have a particular ability to sense when someone is feeling like the “other”, and my instinct is to go to them and make them feel included. I realize that what you see on the outside of someone may not have anything to do with what’s happening inside.While studying business in college, I found my calling during an internship in human resources. I realized it was a career where I could help people become the best version of themselves.My career has taken on even greater meaning with my move into the pharmaceutical industry. When I can enable employees to be the best version of themselves, I help our company be the best it can be. That leads to better therapies for our patients, and it helps patients live the best lives available to them. It makes a big impact on me to hear about what we’ve done for our patients – the positive difference our therapies make for them. I know that I play an important role in ensuring we have the right people with the right skill sets working on these important therapies for patients.I am a Human Resources Business Leader at Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
