A friend once told me, “You have this super-power. You listen while I talk in circles on a problem for two hours, then you encapsulate my feelings and the best next steps in two sentences.” Twenty-some years later, I finally appreciate how powerful that is.The list of skills expected of a clinical genetics laboratory director is long. Therefore, here I’ll say only that I’ve gained a strong grounding in cytogenetic concepts and modern techniques—plus extensive next-gen data analysis, quality control, validation, and variant classification experience. I may also hold the dubious record for most southern blots reviewed in my generation. Yet, technical expertise aside, my most valuable trait remains my ability to listen, integrate, problem-solve, and communicate. I thrive there.
