About Clifton Coker
I was born and raised in New York City. No matter where I travel, my heart is always in NY. The city, in my opinion, is undeniably the best city in the world and one of the few places everyone has his or her own favorite restaurant. I was selected as a Jordan Scholar to attend Poly Prep in Brooklyn, New York. The Jordan Scholars program was established by renowned philanthropist Jay Jordan. The scholarship was awarded to young men who came from underprivileged communities or challenging backgrounds, who excelled academically, athletically, and modeled great character. One of my favorite thoughts fully embodies my time in the Jordan Scholars program: “we can only think to the level to which we are exposed.” I credit much of my ambition and success to the influence of my mother, my brother, my father, Mr. Jay Jordan and to my former high school coach and mentor, Dino Mangiero. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from the University of Richmond where I received a full scholarship and was an All-Conference Division 1 Football player. Prior to Richmond, I captained my wrestling team and played football for the nationally ranked Poly Prep. I have a passion for helping organizations who have hired and/or are willing to hire individuals who were formerly incarcerated because of what these companies do for people and communities. My father was incarcerated for 23 years and I remember how proud he was to find employment and I vividly recall the transformative effect his employment had on our family after he came home. So, I’ve made it my mission to utilize any platform I have to be creative in bringing value to those companies. In honor of our father, my brother and I have founded Myles Away From Home, Inc, a not for profit organization designed to pay attorney fees for qualified, currently incarcerated candidates, whose sentences we believe may be deserving of a second look. We have and continue to build a legal network across the country in order to expand our efforts. The foundation also supports children who have an incarcerated parent.(MylesAwayFund.Org) I am a member of the New York founding chapter of One Hundred Black Men. My emphasis within the service organization and within life is on prison reform, with a particular interest in analyzing and improving the effectiveness of a penal system, identifying and implementing alternatives to incarceration, and ensuring a successful reinstatement of those whose lives are impacted by crime. Interestingly enough, as a child, I had aspirations of becoming an FBI Agent.
