ABOUT CLÉMENT JOULIN

I am passionate about climate change mitigation and the geo-systems that will be key in the energy transition: radioactive waste disposal, geothermal energy and more importantly carbon storage. According to the different scenarios of climate research, the storage of CO2 could offset annually up to half of the current emissions in order to keep global warming below 1.5 ° C (IPCC 2018, Figure SPM.3b). Therefore, I believe that performing fundamental and applied research in this area is essential in the next few decades. These energy geo-systems pose new challenges which require numerical methods that encompass more than one of the thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and chemical (THMC) processes. This is because certain processes are only significant over large exploitation time-scales (e.g. from hundreds to tens of thousands of years for underground disposal of radioactive materials or of greenhouse gases) or because new technologies enhancing the performance of the geo-systems are combining several processes.
