ABOUT CLARKE R. STARNES

Clarke R. Starnes is the retired Vice Chair andChief Risk Officer (CRO) of Truist FinancialCorporation, a purpose-driven financial servicesorganization committed to inspiring and buildingbetter lives and communities. Starnes was thelongest tenured CRO of the top 25 largest banks inthe United States, having held the position from2009 through late 2024.In addition to his significant background in risk,audit, compliance and regulatory management,Starnes has extensive experience in corporatestrategy, mergers and acquisitions, capital/liquidityplanning, asset/liability management, line ofbusiness management, information technology,operations, and data management. He served as amember of Truist\'s executive leadership group, aswell as its predecessor BB & T Corporation’s, from2007 to 2024 and was named Vice Chair in 2022.Starnes was the chief architect of the Truist riskmanagement framework archetype and riskappetite program at the time of the BB & T andSunTrust Banks, Inc. merger of equals in 2019.Previously, Starnes was named Chief Credit Officerin 2008. Prior to that he was a line of businessexecutive for the division of national commercialand retail banking subsidiaries. He has also heldseveral senior leadership roles, including BusinessServices Manager, Regional Senior Credit Officer,Regional Loan Administrator for corporateaccounts, and Direct Retail Lending Risk Manager.Earlier in his career, Starnes managed thecompany’s loan officer development program andcredit analyst department. He completed thecorporate leadership development program in1982.
