About Claira Sohn

I am a sixth year Ph.D. candidate in the Biology of Aging discipline of the Integrated Biomedical Sciences program at UT Health San Antonio. My dissertation work is focused on how nuclear mechanotransduction is altered in neurons harboring pathological tau. This work has allowed me to successfully compete for an F31 through NINDS. Through this work I mainly utilize these skills:1. Mammalian cell culture 2. iPSC-derived 2D and organoid cultures 3. Confocal microscopy 4. FRET imaging techniques 5. Plasmid generation/purification 6. Mass spectrometry sample preparation/analysisAside from my research, I have had an active role in student led organizations on campus. I was the UT Health SA SACNAS Chapter president. This allowed me to build a better sense of community with the first generation/latinx students on campus. Our SACNAS group also outreaches to younger students in San Antonio to serve as mentors. Before starting graduate school, I got my bachelors degree at Northern Arizona university. I studied Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry while working in an undergraduate research laboratory. My research was conducted under Dr. Naomi Lee where we focused on generating self-assembling peptides as a vaccination platform for Human Papillomavirus. Through this research I utilized these skills: 1. Peptide generation/purification 2. Peptide conjugation 3. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)4. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS)5. Tranmission Electron Microcopy (TEM)
