Test Manager @BBC

View department →

I am a test manager in the Enterprise IT department of the BBC. Like many large organisations we procure most of IT systems from third parties. My role is to ensure we get what we want and pay for; I oversee the acceptance testing for software systems when they delivered into the BBC. This means I see a wide variety of projects drop on my desk from simple email upgrades through to new Identity and Access Management ecospheres and bespoke Media Asset Management systems. Depending on the project this means I can be doing something as simple as setting up UAT or as complicated as co-ordinating Non-Functional Testing, Integration Testing, Accessibility Testing, Security Testing and Operational Acceptance.

ABOUT BILL WATSON

My first foray into software came with a Dragon 32 computer in the early 1980s. Having a computer with a less than popular OS meant adapting programmes from ZX Spectrum magazines and lengthy debugging sessions resulted! With that kind of start a career in test has a certain inevitability.I\'m currently a test manager at the BBC specialising in Acceptance Testing of Enterprise IT systems; in other words when we get new IT systems I make sure that they work and do what we want. It\'s a great job with a lot of variety; one project might be a Media Asset Management system, which is a large complex beast with many moving parts, and the next project bespoke TV camera positioning software. Before joining the BBC I worked in areas such as smartphone R&D and as a contractor running test campaigns and setting up QA departments from London to Nairobi.I enjoy enthusing about acceptance testing, its often overlook importance and its wrinkles as well as other testing topics, such as the role of philosophy in test. When I\'m not testing I enjoy exploring, be it in the form of a good book or a cycle ride. In fact, when Sony Ericsson shuttered their UK smartphone division I cycled from the UK to Vietnam.
