ABOUT JOSH NEWTON

Dr. Josh Newton is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Homelessness Hub in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of Texas at Arlington. He recently received the Current Research Award from the Community Development Society and was a Crossing Latinidades Mellon Fellow during his PhD program. His research draws on critical theories and mixed methods to examine the outcomes of neoliberal governance, policy, and interventions. His research includes work on the impact of philanthropic community development initiatives on low-income residents and neighborhoods; housing precarity and grassroots solutions in informal subdivisions in peri-urban neighborhoods and SROs in urban downtowns; shared equity housing models such as community land trusts, limited equity housing cooperatives, and resident-owned communities; and the use of community development tactics by craft breweries. Josh has also taught courses at University of California, San Diego and University of Texas at Arlington on race/ethnicity, the history of U.S. urban communities, history of urban planning, and urban planning and design theory.
