ABOUT CIARAN FROST

My key expertise is in techno-economic assessment of offshore energy systems, including offshore wind, tidal stream and wave energy. My analytical skills cover levelised cost of energy (LCOE) analysis, numerical modelling and GIS. I graduated with an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) at IDCORE (the Industrial Doctoral Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy). My research project was focussed on designing tools to carry out economic assessment of wave energy projects, in collaboration with wave energy developer Albatern.My most significant research was in developing a numerical model to map energy yield, costs and LCOE over geographic areas. The resulting “heat maps” allow the most competitive areas to be identified for a given project. The bespoke, object orientated model is fully coded in Python. Input data and results are exported as files that can be viewed and manipulated in GIS software. The model also allows hybrid wave energy systems to be examined, primarily wave-battery-diesel generator systems, using a power balancing algorithm that I developed in-house. The performance of these systems can also be mapped.
