About Chynna Flock
As far back as I can remember, it was always my dream to work in the healthcare field. The desire to help people has always been a strong characteristic of mine – but that still leaves quite a broad spectrum of choices. Once I finished high school, I felt pressure to decide immediately what my career would be, so I made a quick decision and applied to the Physical Therapist Assistant program. I graduated from Western Technical College in 2012 and continued to work in physical therapy for 6.5 years. I excelled at my job, I was the person anyone could turn to for a solution or help – but I found myself not enjoying work anymore. I wasn’t passionate about it, there was no room for advancement, I felt like I was settling for comfortable and I wanted to do more. So, I decided to take a leap of faith and made the decision to quit my job and return to college to find that career that I wanted to do for the rest of my life – Radiation Therapy Oncology. Cancer has affected my life since the age of 13 – that was when my mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer; thankfully she eventually went into remission. Then, in November 2016 we got the news that she now had metastatic ovarian cancer, later losing her long fought battle in 2021. During this trying time, I found myself wanting to be a part of such an amazing healthcare team – oncology. I came to the realization that I want to be able to be there for people going through the same struggle as my mom and our family. I want to know that even if I cannot save everyone around me that I am at least able to help them through such an emotionally and physically difficult time and do everything that I possibly can to make the process easier. I have learned through years of experience in the healthcare field that my calling is patient care. With my personal experience, I have realized that oncology is something I am very passionate about – and I can’t imagine a better career to work in than being a Radiation Therapist.
