Remember Tom in the movie Office Space? He’s the guy who’s nervous that the consultants (Bob and Bob) are going to cut his job as an intermediary between the customers and the engineers. He tries to explain that Initech needs him in that position because, unlike the engineers, he\'s a people person. While the scene is funny it also rings true for any organization that manufactures a technical product. The customer always needs help understanding the products and the engineering team needs help understanding what the customer wants. Without people in the middle (technical sales, application engineering, product management) who understand both sides, a bunch of highly skilled engineers will create products nobody wants and customers won\'t have an easy way to get support for those products or provide feedback.I have lived in this space for a long time. I’ve been the application engineer designing systems to meet customers’ needs. I’ve been the technical salesperson, juggling all the internal and external challenges between a customer inquiry and a profitable sale. I’ve been the sales manager, striving to exceed sales and profit targets while managing a diverse team and negotiating commercial and legal terms on each project that satisfy all stakeholders. Today I’m taking everything I’ve learned and applying it to my role as global product line manager, managing teams of salespeople, project and product engineers, and project managers to grow a profitable $60MM business globally.
