ABOUT CHRISTOPHER PAYNE
am the lead hardware engineer at Viam - a robotics platform that helps entrepreneurs and businesses take ideas to production-ready robots. At Viam, I develop robotic hardware products, prototype concepts and build hardware solutions for customers. Previously, I worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Harvard, developing biomedical devices; from soft robotic systems for cardiac assistance to devices for muscle regeneration. I published this work in journals including Science Robotics, Science Translational Medicine, Advanced Materials Technologies and Soft Robotics. During my time at Boston Children\'s Hospital, I was a co-inventor of a growth-accommodating heart valve for pediatric patients (now known as the Autus Valve), published in Science Translational Medicine and currently undergoing clinical trials.I hold a PhD in robotics and a MEng in mechanical engineering, both from Imperial College London. My research at Imperial focused on medical robotics; including precision hand-held devices for micromanipulation tasks in microsurgery, snake robots for minimally invasive surgery, robotic catheter research for endovascular interventions, neurosurgical robotics and medical device translation.
