Written Communication (110)A prerequisite for Advanced Written Communication (120). The writing assignments focus primarily on the introduction to argument essays, and students are introduced to research strategies, MLA documentation, and must complete an investigative research paper before passing the class. Emphasis is placed on the process of constructing a cohesive essay. Part of the class focuses on recognizing audience and intention, learning about concepts such as voice and tone, and reviewing basic writing skills (spelling, grammar, development of a thesis, focus, clear organization and transitions). Advanced Written Communication (120)Although this is a GEC course, Advanced Written Communication is quite rigorous and requires that students write words of revised, polished prose and analyze full-length texts (multi-genre: both fiction and non-fiction). The focus of this course moves students away from the personal essay, and towards the various strategies for developing extensive argument essays. Some of the assigned essays include: a rhetorical analysis of an assigned text, a persuasive investigative research essay with a proven hypothesis, a classical argument essay demanding change, and an evaluative essay with the application of ethical, aesthetic, or practical criteria. Students are expected to respond to weekly reading assignments,(both in writing and in class discussions) critique one another\'s work in guided peer workshops, and prove that they have mastered the vocabulary necessary to evaluate and to compose argument essays, which includes: developing a thesis (claim), maintaining an argument, reaching an intended audience, maintaining focus and organization, and developing reason and logic in prose form. In addition, students must master MLA documentation and conduct independent primary and secondary research. There is an emphasis on revision, including free-writing, outlining, mapping, and other strategies for the drafting process.
