ABOUT CHRISTOPHER MAYELL
As Head of Fleet at National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), I lead one of the UK’s largest and most operationally critical commercial fleets — around company cars and 4,250 commercial vehicles supporting 24/7 electricity network operations across England and Wales.The fleet is a critical enabler, allowing Field Operations to respond quickly and safely for the customers and communities we serve. My role is to ensure we deliver a fleet that is safe, compliant, reliable and cost-efficient today, while actively transitioning to a low-carbon, future-ready operation aligned to the UK’s net zero ambitions.I lead the in-house fleet function, including a network of 33 workshops, with accountability for safety and compliance, strategy and policy, capital and operational budgets, and major transformation programmes. I lead a high-performing team focused on operational excellence and pragmatic innovation, ensuring a resilient fleet that supports both day-to-day network reliability and the long-term transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy system.
