The Dissemination Technology and Services Branch is the CDC\'s data communications accelerator. We use human-centered design and engineering to share data in ways that empower the public to make smart decisions.My responsibilities include: Leading the branch through its “startup phase.” In our first year we grew from just a handful of staff to a team of 40+ and established new teams for data engineering, data visualization, and project management. Leveraging human-centered design and data visualization best practices to improve communications for urgent public health issues, including seasonal respiratory viruses, the mental health crisis, and firearms deaths. Developing and implementing an agency-wide strategy for sharing data from within the CDC’s new, centralized data platform, and overseeing other forward-looking projects, such as the application of AI in public health communications. Relentlessly prioritizing work that delivers value to the public. In our first year we delivered a mobile-first presentation of seasonal respiratory virus data that more than doubled the number of users. Forging enduring partnerships with teams across the agency to support modernizing data-driven storytelling, including by rallying support for building high quality data visualization tooling. Providing agency-level leadership on data visualization best practices. In our first year I delivered presentations on data storytelling to CDC staff and served as a Steering Committee member for the CDC’s Data Viz Science Advisory Group.
