ABOUT CHRISTOPHER WOODGATE
I am a theoretical physicist and computational materials scientist, currently an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow in the School of Physics at the University of Bristol. From 2024 to 2025 I was also a CoSeC Fellow. I am based in the School\'s Theoretical Physics theme and lead an independent programme of research in the broad areas of materials theory and materials simulation. Physical systems of interest include alloys, oxides, and magnetic materials, with a current focus on high-entropy alloys and rare-earth-free and rare-earth-lean permanent magnets. Techniques I use include first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, atomistic models (including machine-learned interatomic potentials), and a range of tools from statistical physics. I am fluent in several programming languages, proficient with both shared- and distributed-memory parallelisation, and also have significant experience in use of high-performance computing (HPC) platforms to perform computationally intensive calculations/simulations. Further, I have a track record of successful engagement in international collaborations including with experimental partners.Before joining Bristol, I was a PhD student and then a postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick under the supervision of Prof. Julie B. Staunton. For my PhD studies, I was based within the interdisciplinary EPSRC-supported Centre for Doctoral Training in Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems, which gave me a firm grounding in computational materials modelling techniques across length scales, as well as exposing me to a range of predictive modelling techniques.Outside of my work, I find time to practise the hobby of English-style change ringing and am a full member of the Association of Ringing Teachers. I am also involved with the sport of Archery, where I am a qualified coach, have previously competed at an international level, and have also held a variety of voluntary club committee positions.
