ABOUT CHRISTOPHER BISHOP

I am a highly motivated, driven and passionate healthcare professional with a diverse background in clinical perfusion science, renal replacement therapy, emergency medicine, critical care and clinical toxicology research. My main interest areas include extracorporeal life support in refractory cardiopulmonary failure, the mechanisms underlying shock states in trauma and novel extracorporeal-endovascular resuscitation strategies in traumatic injury, shock and cardiac arrest. I am currently a Senior Clinical Fellow in Trauma ECMO within the Centre for Trauma Sciences, Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). As part of the \'Transform Trauma\' project, my PhD is focused on: The design and analysis of clinical and biomarker methods to rapidly identify patients who are likely to develop early cardiac dysfunction after trauma; the determination of the feasibility of, and the clinical, logistic and human factors barriers to, the rapid institution of VA-ECMO in critically bleeding trauma patients; identification of complications and barriers to successful institution, maintenance and withdrawal of VA-ECMO; and to understand potential outcome benefits of VA-ECMO in critically bleeding trauma patients. As an enthusiastic and experienced clinical educator, I regularly teach on Resuscitation Council UK Advanced Life Support (ALS), European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) courses. I have previously held a teaching fellow post at the Guy\'s, King\'s and St. Thomas\' Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine at King\'s College London. I have lectured on MSc courses in critical care medicine and perfusion science in the field of extracorporeal life support (ECLS). I am a current honorary lecturer on the iBSc and MSc in Prehospital Medicine at QMUL where I enjoy combining my expertise in resuscitation science and ECLS. Working in high-throughput tertiary cardiac centres, I have provided perfusion services for routine and emergency cardiothoracic surgery in adult, neonatal, paediatric and adult congenital heart disease populations. I have also been actively involved in the nationally commissioned severe acute respiratory failure (SARF) service and retrieve patients on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). I have additional experience in retrieving patients requiring veno-arterial (VA)- ECMO for refractory cardiogenic shock/cardiac arrest. My varied background across various clinical disciplines and academia make me a well-rounded and experienced clinician and an aspiring clinician-scientist.
