About Christina Chang

When I was 7 years old, I wrote stories about Hello Kitty — one, in particular, was about all the inhabitants in “Hello Kitty Land” coming together to fight a dragon. Not the most original plot, I’ll admit. But the moral of the story? I am a born storyteller.Upon joining my high school newspaper staff, I went from crafting make-believe stories about fictional characters to reporting on the real, lived experiences of my peers. I was honored to be named a finalist for Youth Journalism International\'s 2023 Student Journalist of the Year and the National Scholastic Press Association\'s 2022 Writer of the Year — both for portfolios of clips profiling unique individual experiences and surfacing broader community challenges.Having written 100+ stories and edited 1,300+ others, journalism has inspired me to be an active world citizen and nudged me to confront social justice issues. As a Senior Staff Writer for The Daily Californian, the paper of record for the city of Berkeley, I authored a “Conversations with Strangers” series to amplify voices that often go unheard. Working as a Research Apprentice for Dr. Sean Darling-Hammond has deepened my understanding of social issues. As part of the Thriving and Health Equity through Social Inclusion in Schools Lab, I carried out literature reviews and qualitative studies concerning K-12 school policies and minority student well-being, illuminating the pressing challenges today’s youth face.I’ve also discovered a passion for sparking change through community service, and have accumulated service hours to date. Through my roles as President of CASCADE: Community Service and Service Vice President of my campus chapter of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, I’ve both engaged in and facilitated hands-on service opportunities ranging from teaching children social-emotional skills to working at food pantries to combat food insecurity. At UC Berkeley, I am pursuing a B.A. in Psychology with minors in Journalism and Politics, Philosophy & Law. I’m fascinated by the intersections of these fields and how they can be employed to drive meaningful change. Wherever I end up — be it research, communications, public relations, law, or something else entirely — I’ll be driven by my passion for crafting stories with empathy and care.I am always learning, ever curious, and endlessly discovering. In my leisure time, I find joy in writing poems, contemplating philosophical questions, hiking, playing basketball, and admiring the sunset.Let’s connect!
