I organized and created a course that equipped students with essential research, writing, and critical thinking skills while learning about cognitive neuroscience. Each week, students reviewed key concepts in neuroscience to understand how biological processes in the brain give rise to memory, emotion, sensation, movement, and decision-making. Following this conceptual review, students examined these findings through the context of academic research to understand the reasoning behind the scientific method. In addition, we reviewed modern neuroscience methodology used to investigate the cause of neurobiological and psychiatric disorders, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the efficacy of current therapies and treatments. The overall goal of this course was to foster an interest in neuroscience and guide students through their own research topics via weekly assignments centering around formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, and interpreting experimental results. By the end of the course, students were prepared to give a short presentation on their research topic.
