About Christi A. Grimm
I was the Inspector General (IG) for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. What are IGs? Established in 1978, they are independent, nonpartisan officials tasked by Congress to oversee Federal agencies, promote efficiency and effectiveness, and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse. They conduct audits, investigations, and evaluations to identify improper payments and other types of waste, detect and root out fraud, and assess programs and operations to recommend improvements. In the 5 years that I led HHS OIG, my office reported $22.369 billion in expected investigative and audit receivables. Source: https://oig.hhs.gov/reports/all/?report-type=SARSelect accomplishments as IG included: • Leading OIG auditors and investigators to identify $7.13 billion in expected recoveries for 2024 alone (real money going back to the U.S. Treasury!) • Making nursing homes safer for residents and staff by uncovering substandard care that resulted in harm such as costly medical injury, unsafe conditions, and abuse and neglect of residents. • Combatting opioid fraud by leveraging analytics, targeted enforcement efforts, and partnerships with public health officials. The OIG team held accountable those who criminally benefited from drug diversion. In one resolved opioid-related case, an upstart telehealth entity was ordered to pay $1.54 billion in criminal fines and forfeiture. • Leading oversight of CARES Act funding streams, including more than $150 billion in Provider Relief Fund (PRF) activity and obtaining access to program data to successfully pinpoint and pursue fraud investigations involving these funds. • Identifying challenges at the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) that raise concerns about children’s health and well-being. Saw operational, safety, IT security and functionality, and child welfare recommendations implemented as a result of my office’s work. • PROUDLY led the phenomenal team at HHS OIG to achieve status of “Best Place to Work in HHS,” for 20••••24. In 2024, HHS OIG was ranked second in the Best Places to Work among ALL midsize Federal agencies by the Partnership for Public Service.I now educate on the important role of Inspectors General.
