ABOUT CHRIS SURRIDGE

As well as having a strong grounding in primary scientific research I have had 29 years of experience in scientific publishing. This began in relatively traditional print journal publishing within the Nature Publishing group but has since involved increasing use of the new technologies that the development of the World Wide Web. My most recent project was to launch PLoS ONE a radical new Open Access science publication attempting to marry the strengths of traditional peer review with the potential provided by collaborative internet technologies (so called web 2.0) to provide an inclusive and efficient medium for the dissemination of scientific research. I have been responsible for managing its launch in December 2006 and the assembly and management of its editorial team, both professional and the 400+ members of its academic editorial board. In its first year PLoS ONE received over submission and published more than 1300 research articles. This post has also given me extensive opportunity to explore the use of blogs in scientific publishing.
