If I take the sum of my experience and boil it down to one statement, it’s that the quality of a team, and the culture that binds them, is the only meaningful predictor of success.I hate the trope that “work is family.” Family is like neighbors – you don’t get to pick them, it’s great when it works out, and terrible when it doesn’t. But we do get to choose the people that we work with, so why wouldn’t we choose people we like spending time with, that we respect and want to see succeed? Life’s too short to settle for anything less.I’ve been in the enterprise software world for almost 30 years, first as an engineer, and later in management. I’ve worked in all sorts of environments, from startups to global, public corporations, and I was fortunate to lead one company through a successful exit; but my biggest takeaway from that experience wasn’t the result but the journey, and the feeling that it didn’t matter if we ended up winning or losing, because we knew that all of us were giving it our all for each other.Life is too short to settle for anything less.
