ABOUT CHRIS LOWETH

I am Director of Legal & Rights, BBC News International Services, with a passionate interest in media, and nearly three decades of commercial, legal and regulatory experience in TV broadcasting and production, digital publishing, and live events. Today, I provide agile business solutions to highly complex and technical areas, with exposure across seven operating companies and 350 employees in 12 countries. With an unwavering ethical compass, I influence leadership strategy, navigate highly regulated compliance environments and leverage commercial growth, with an ability to close deals in complex territories. I resonate across all levels, with an understanding of target audiences and breadth of practical experience. I build high-performing teams and appreciate global cultural differences and work practices. My media career started at L!VE TV / MirrorTel in 1998 as a Programme Lawyer, having qualified and initially worked as a Barrister. In I transitioned to TV production as Legal and Business Affairs Advisor for Planet 24, that included The Big Breakfast on Channel 4 and the launch of Survivor on ITV. In 2002, I joined Channel 5, progressing to Head of Content Legal Advice, where I broke new ground regarding programme content, product placement, advertisement and sponsorship. In 2011, I joined the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games as Senior Ceremonies Lawyer. Here, I drafted and negotiated legal agreements and advised on headline talent, composers, music clearances, film commissions, contracts, footage and character licences, as well as child performance licensing. I achieved flexibility on IPR and exceeded publishing and revenue targets, before moving to the BBC in 2012.
