About Chris Whitehouse

Dr. Whitehouse is an experienced scientist and leader in the fields of microbiology and infectious diseases. He obtained his BS degree in Biology from Old Dominion University and his master’s degree in Parasitology from the University of Louisville. He received his PhD in microbiology with a focus on bacterial pathogenesis from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. After postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Kentucky and University of Rhode Island, he began working as a research scientist for the U.S. Army, spending more than 15 years at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID). At USAMRIID, he was a research scientist in the Virology Division, where he researched and helped develop antiviral compounds against BSL-3/4 viruses, such as Ebola and monkeypox. He was also a Guest Researcher at the CDC, where he worked on diagnostics development and antiviral testing against the smallpox virus. He was a principal investigator within the Diagnostic Systems Division for 6 years focusing on pathogen diagnostics and ultimately progressed to become Associate Director of the USAMRIID Center for Genomic Sciences. In 2012, Dr. Whitehouse became Branch Chief of the Disease Investigation Branch at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, where he led a team of microbiologists, virologists, veterinarians, and field biologists in support of wildlife disease outbreak investigations throughout the U.S. In 2016, he became Deputy Director of the Division of Animal and Food Microbiology (DAFM) within the FDA/Center for Veterinary Medicine’s Office of Research. In 2020, he became Deputy Director of the Office of Applied Science. He has authored over 75 scientific articles, 13 book chapters, and edited a book on Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.
