Operations Team Lead - Advanced Electrification @bp

View department →

Pangbourne, GB

Beginning on a contract for the first 11 months, my job at bp/Castrol was first to assist setting-up the Advanced Electrification Team by putting quality and safety procedures in place. That has bourn fruit with a successful ISO9001 pass in Nov\'25. Also the contract used my lab-building experience to specify and manage the build of battery test facilities. Those achieved, I then took a permanent position to manage the operations team and its EV battery thermal management test facilities.

ABOUT CHRIS MATHER

I’m an engineering leader with over 25 years’ experience delivering complex electrification, energy, and automotive technology programmes — from early-stage concept to certified, production-ready systems. My career spans EVs, battery systems, fuel cells, functional safety, motorcycle design, and high-performance motorsport, with a consistent thread of building high-performing teams, world-class facilities, and robust products that ship.Today I lead Operations for bp/Castrol’s Advanced Electrification Team, where I originally joined to establish quality and safety foundations, build new battery testing labs, and support ISO9001 certification. I now manage a growing operations group and oversee EV battery thermal management test facilities.Previously, as CTO and Chief Electrical Engineer at Arc Vehicle, I combined technical leadership with hands-on engineering — delivering production electric motorcycles, winning Innovate UK grants, adding IoT connectivity, and shaping technology strategy while supporting investment rounds and board-level decisions. Before that, at Arrival, I held multiple senior positions including Head of Fuel Cell Systems and Head of Electrical Engineering. I built hydrogen and EV development facilities from scratch, grew multidisciplinary teams, and delivered the low- and high-voltage systems, software, and safety architecture for Arrival’s pioneering van platform. My foundation comes from a decade in Formula 1 and advanced automotive engineering — Williams F1, Renault F1, Aston Martin, dSPACE — developing control systems, simulation tools, electronics integration, and safety-critical software.Across all roles, I’m known for:• Leading and scaling engineering teams through rapid change• Building labs, processes, and safety systems that stand up to audit• Delivering electrification technologies from concept to production• Combining big-picture strategy with hands-on technical depth• Clear communication with execs, boards, investors, and partnersI’m motivated by solving tough engineering problems, creating strong teams and facilities, and helping companies bring next-generation electrified products to life.
