Twenty seven years’ experience in drug discovery and development as a discovery line head and executive team leader of global, multi-disciplinary teams of up to 100 staff in Pfizer Global R&D and Astellas Pharma Global Development working in Europe, the US and Japan. Leader of the teams responsible for discovering the life-saving, broad-spectrum antifungal agent, VFend (Voriconazole) and exploratory development of the anti-HIV agent, Selzentry (Maraviroc), with combined sales >$1Bn. Accomplished leader of Phase programs across a wide range of therapeutic areas (Anti-Infectives, Inflamation, Endocrine, Cardiovascular, Pain, Allergy & Respiratory, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Urology and Nephrology), regulatory filing and interactions (FDA, EMEA & PMDA), running large biotechnology and Pharma collaborations (e.g. Millennium, Virologic/Monogram, Janssen Biotech & FibroGen), therapeutic area strategy development and commercial product support. Driven business development initiatives aimed at maximising the return-on-investment of R&D assets (compounds, technologies & infrastructure) through value propositions and business plans that align with internal business units, as well as in-licensing/out-licensing assets and innovative business models for sharing risk and cost with external investors. Driven global initiatives to improve cost-effectiveness of managing Phase I/II candidate attrition, strategic alignment between Research, Development and Commercial Divisions and embed organisational learning. Chaired scientific advisory boards (academic, industrial & government) and presented at numerous international meetings on strategic and technical aspects of pharmaceutical R&D. Recognised as one of the Top 50 Research Leaders in Medical Treatment by Scientific American (2003-04) for the discovery and exploratory development of VFend and Selzentry. Selzentry was named ‘Best Pharmaceutical Agent’ at the Prix Galien USA 2008 awards.
