ABOUT CHRIS BJORNSSON
My background includes a strong foundation in tissue preparation and imaging techniques. Teaching both Comparative Animal Histology and Microtechnique courses at both lab and lecture levels throughout graduate studies has led to an appreciation for the breadth of preparative techniques required for different biological samples. Learning electrophysiology and imaging in a prominent Canadian light and electron microscopy lab to investigate the role of ionic polarity during insect oogenesis has fostered a deep appreciation for the technical expertise and troubleshooting necessary to overcome research obstacles before even getting to imaging and analysis. My postdoc involved multiplex fluorescence labeling to study neuronal, glial and vascular responses to chronic cortical neural prosthetic device insertion. Following this postdoc, being solely responsible for 2+ Core Facilities with a diverse range of equipment led to quick uptake in terms of hardware and applications, and reinforced an emphasis on teaching. Latest research efforts implemented multiplex fluorescence labeling of thick tissue combined with spectral confocal microscopy, live tissue explant imaging using confocal and multiphoton imaging, and molecular approaches to investigate the interplay between the choroid plexus and adult neurogenesis in the context of aging. Work with Zeiss has involved sales and training on every microscope that slings a photon, supporting roughly 18 intense courses at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA throughout the summer for 3 years running. Currently enjoying supporting demos, training and sample runs at the Zeiss ZMCC Customer Center at Dublin CA.
