Why I Founded the Child Therapy Service CICBy Tracy Chadwick, FounderAs a specialist in SEMH education, expressive arts, and somatic practices, I’ve seen first-hand how emotional dysregulation can prevent children and young people from fully engaging in education, forming friendships, and exploring the world around them.While many well-meaning interventions are put in place, they often focus on surface behaviours without addressing the deeper needs that drive them. As a result, behaviours like aggression, defiance, or withdrawal can persist – leaving children feeling even more misunderstood, isolated, and disconnected.This understanding led me to develop a therapeutic framework that targets the root causes of dysregulation. It focuses on key areas such as attachment, sensory processing, emotional regulation, social connection, and self-esteem. With the right support, I’ve seen children who were once filled with anger and frustration begin to feel safe, seen, and empowered to manage their emotions differently.One moment that stands out was when a child told me: “I felt stressed, so I went to the toilet, used that technique, and it worked – I went back into class.”That simple moment captured everything we’re working towards – a child recognising their own needs, using a strategy that works for them, and returning to learning feeling calm and in control.This is why I founded the Child Therapy Service CIC: to help children understand themselves, access the support they truly need, and grow into their full potential – with confidence, connection and compassion at the heart of it all.
