ABOUT CHEYENNE FERNANDES

Hi! I am Cheyenne Marie Fernandes, and I am a first-generation college student in my fourth year of studying biochemistry on a pre-med track at UCLA. My passion for medicine has stemmed from years of being a caretaker for my grandparents. I\'m extremely passionate about pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine as a Trauma Surgeon, but I also have a deep adoration for Neuroscience and Biochemistry, so I would like to integrate that aspect into my future career. My love for the sciences has led me to pursue research in degenerative diseases, more specifically Multiple Sclerosis, and find methods of treatment that can slow the progression, and hopefully cure it. I hope to eventually get my MD/PhD to combine these passions and make them a reality as a physician-scientist. Besides medicine, I am fueled by social justice and advocating for equality in all intersections of health, society, and more. I love learning about new developments in politics and how we can bridge the disparities in society to ultimately benefit all marginalized communities in the healthcare system. My ultimate passion for helping the voices of patients who aren\'t typically heard is inherited from my diverse immigrant background, to provide a safe space for immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and other people who feel as if they are unable to trust or confide in the American healthcare system. I am interested in connecting healthcare professionals and research scientists to discuss how we can better improve the system we work for and other people within any sector to talk about bridging disparities in any sector of society, but especially the medical system. I would also love to talk about and expand my knowledge on medical research, specifically stem cell research! Thank you!
