ABOUT CHELSEY FEDCHENKO

I am a Registered Social Worker who recently completed a Master of Social Work (MSW) at Wilfrid Laurier University. My clinical experience lies within community and hospital settings, working with vulnerable populations experiencing mental health and substances use issues. I am fiercely passionate about the pursuit of equity-oriented health care and the provision of higher quality care for all persons. Underscoring my passion is a guiding philosophy that the key to improving the problems that exist within our healthcare systems lies within the individuals who experience these systems. My work is grounded in my lived experience and that of others. My MSW thesis research, for which I was awarded a gold medal of academic excellence, explored the experiences and perceptions of hospitalization amongst street-involved youth in Ontario, Canada, through body-map storytelling, an arts-based research methodology. My research is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and falls within SSHRC’s Future Challenge area that addresses the shifting dynamics of privilege and marginalization. My continued research seeks to address privilege-based disparities in health care by drawing awareness to the experiences and perceptions of vulnerable populations experiencing mental health and substance use issues in hospital settings.
