ABOUT CHELSEA OHAKA

My name is Chelsea Ohaka, and I’m proud to introduce myself as a Nigerian junior majoring in biomolecular science on the pre-med track, from Southfield, Michigan. As I pursue my dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon, I am driven by a passion not only for medicine but also for making a meaningful impact within my community, particularly among Black women who aspire to enter the field of orthopedics.Throughout my journey, I\'ve been deeply involved in various community service initiatives, with a special focus on healthcare and sports medicine. Volunteering at the World Medical Relief center in Southfield has been one of the most rewarding experiences I\'ve had. Alongside my peers, I helped package and prepare medical devices, ranging from surgical tools to essential patient care items, to be sent to countries where access to quality healthcare is limited. This experience has enriched my understanding of global healthcare disparities and further fueled my commitment to giving back.As someone who is passionate about sports medicine, I understand the critical role it plays in orthopedic care, particularly in preventing and treating injuries that athletes often face. My goal is to combine my interests in sports medicine and orthopedics to provide comprehensive care, and to serve as a role model for other Black women who are navigating the challenges of pursuing a career in these specialized fields.I believe that representation matters, and I am determined to contribute to the growing presence of Black women in orthopedics. By breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, I hope to inspire the next generation of women of color to pursue their dreams in medicine, especially in areas where we have been historically underrepresented.Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey.
