About Chayan Bansal
Tech Lead at Setu (Payments Infrastructure), building and scaling the bill payments stack.I operate at the intersection of engineering leadership and hands-on systems work: setting technical direction, owning engineering outcomes and ensuring reliability for high-scale, low-latency, event-driven platforms. If you’ve paid a bill digitally in India, there’s a good chance the request passed through systems my team and I built.Currently, I lead a team of engineers — owning architecture decisions, raising engineering quality through reviews & best practices and working closely with product/business stakeholders.I’ve taken systems from 0→1 and scaled them from 1→100, with a strong focus on maintainability and cost-effective scale.Focus areas: Distributed systems, event-driven architecture, platform engineering, performance, reliability, team leadership, execution
Experience
Tech Lead
Apr 2025 — Present
Technical Lead for Setu’s Bill Payments (BBPS) Platform that handles payments worth over INR 70k crore every month; responsible for architecture, scale, reliability and delivery- Brought down p99 API latency for the customer-facing product from ~3 sec to <150ms supporting peak load of 750+ bill fetches/sec, 150+ payments/sec and overall requests per second (includes status polling APIs). Reduced DB contention by partitioning hot tables, caching intermediate state & moving to “cache + ack first, persist later” design- Reduced AWS spend by per month for the merchant-facing product by refactoring data model/schema for a critical request flow with zero downtime- Actively contributed in the design and build of the MCP server as a wrapper over existing bill payment APIs- Partnered with the EM/PMs and stakeholders on roadmap and capacity planning- Coached junior engineers on incident triage and settlement workflows, enabling them to resolve issues independently; improving on-call confidence- Drove a merge-request hygiene push by running an MR cleanup sprint; built a Lambda + Slack bot that flags MRs pending for more than 4 days and notifies the team- Identified and owned tech debt work across sprints/roadmaps to improve cost efficiency, maintainability, reliability and developer productivity- Led RabbitMQ to SQS migration, reducing queueing infra costs by ~50%.
