About Chaya Jones

Show me your numbers and I’ll tell you a story. I’m a blend of rigorous math and data nerd with a creative and human approach. I try not to get stuck in one mode of thinking or tool for too long; I’m just as comfortable with a simple spreadsheet as I am with a complex predictive data model or a beautiful and well-designed data visualization. My focus is on education and social welfare policy work, where evaluating both quantitative and qualitative data is key to understanding the true impact of any program. I’m deeply committed to liberatory and anti-racist principles, design, and practices, and seek out opportunities to deepen my learning whenever possible. I spend a lot of time thinking and talking about story-based strategies for data, equitable evaluation, innovations in data modeling and research, better ways to drive and measure impact, and equity and inclusion in education reform. I have experience in data sourcing and management as well as database architecture and design; I love to consider ways to make a data pipeline and workflow more efficient - and right-sized for the project. I’m ambidextrous in systems-level and person/student-level thinking and analysis, and stay grounded in integrity with an eye on balancing what’s speculative, probable, and real. My current work centers on mixed-methods equitable evaluation practices, elevating student, community, and stakeholder voice as expert primary sources and synthesizing disparate forms of evidence (quantitative, qualitative, narrative, observational) into actionable insights about program impact. Previously: On the K-12 Education team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, I supported the Networks for School Improvement portfolio, managing and using a large range of data sets, research, and analysis to discover the patterns and themes that let us see program impact and opportunities. I did research about research for the University of Washington\'s Office of Research Information Services, developing methodology and models to identify complex research and collaborative opportunities. I supported Equal Opportunity Schools’ mission to desegregate advanced high school course-taking with data analysis, reporting, and coaching. I worked with Columbia Legal Services to provide analysis, headlines, and insights about students experiencing homelessness, finding new ways to communicate their experiences in concrete and tangible ways. I am always growing my network with like-minded people and co-conspirators for a better future, so if you would like to connect, please feel free to reach out.
