Charniele Herring has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 2009, becoming the first black woman from Northern Virginia ever elected to the historic legislature. She has represented the people of Alexandria and Fairfax in the 46th district, now the 4th district after the decennial redistricting.She has held a number of leadership positions, including minority whip and caucus chair. Presently she is serving in her second term as Majority Leader. Charniele has been a major advocate for criminal justice reform, women\'s health, and the environment. She has successfully passed major legislation including the Reproductive Health and Protection Act, Clean Energy and Community Flood Preparedness Act, and Marijuana Decriminalization. She has also helped establish important programs such as the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Prevention Fund, the Opioid Abatement Authority, and the Virginia Council on Environmental Justice.
