ABOUT CHARLOTTE HAYNES

Educator | Program Manager | Researcher | Facilitator Based in Guatemala | Working across Abya Yala and beyondI am an educator and researcher from the United States, living in Guatemala, with over a decade of experience accompanying teachers, communities, and justice system actors in processes of learning, unlearning, and collective inquiry. My work is grounded in pluriversal, decolonial, and feminist approaches to education, knowledge production, and healing in contexts shaped by colonial violence and structural inequality.I have walked alongside educators in post-conflict and historically marginalized communities, co-creating spaces for inquiry into difficult pasts and present struggles. My practice is shaped by intersectional, body-centered, and affective pedagogies that seek to restore memory, repair relationships, and reimagine futures. I draw on tools from participatory action research, historical inquiry, and popular education traditions that honor multiple ways of knowing and being.In May 2025, I defended my doctoral dissertation, “Sentipensando the Violent Pasts of Guatemala: Pluriversal Examinations of Teacher Learning through Historical Inquiry,” at Teachers College, Columbia University. The dissertation explores how teachers engage with memory, history, and the affective legacies of violence through pedagogical processes rooted in felt-thinking (sentipensando) difficult histories.From 2019 to 2024, I worked with Justice Education Society (JES) in Guatemala and later regionally, supporting projects with justice institutions and civil society to strengthen responses to violence and exploitation through more transparent, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered systems.
