Project Manager for Black Farmers Initiative Research Program: Stanford and Oakland-based Black farmer advocacy organization Farms to Grow, Inc have a 4-year-long and ongoing partnership to advance justice for Black farmers. Stanford dining halls source dozens of varieties of specialty crops—including seedless red and yellow watermelon, black eye and purple hull peas, crimson and emerald okra, and sweet potatoes—from California Black farmers. Stanford and Farms to Grow, Inc are working to scale this partnership model to more institutions through in-depth collaborations with farmers and foodservice operators. We aim to help more institutions act on their responsibility to leverage their purchasing power to contest centuries of systemic racial injustice experienced by Black farmers, and support their resilient success in wholesale food retail, land reclamation, and intergenerational wealth-creation.Co-author on the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative (MCURC)\"Racial Equity in University Foodservice Playbook\": The playbook aims to help university dining programs adapt their employment practices to support career opportunities and advancement for people of color in university food service through equitable hiring, promotion, training, and other programs.

ABOUT CHARLIE HOFFS
I aim to work in coalition with others to advance environmental justice and public health for all. In 2024, through a Fulbright Research Scholarship, I will work with Dr. Manuel Prieto and a coalition of Aymara llama and alpaca herders, organizers, and community leaders to advance policy protecting sustainable Indigenous herding practices in the Northern Chilean Andes. As Project Manager for the Stanford Food Institute, I help coordinate the Black Farmers Initiative Research Program. By purchasing produce directly from Black farmers and by deepening our farmer partnerships through Oakland-based Black farmer advocacy organization Farms to Grow, Inc: we aim to help more institutions act on their responsibility to leverage their purchasing power to contest centuries of systemic racial injustice experienced by Black farmers, and support their resilient success in wholesale food retail, land reclamation, and intergenerational wealth-creation. I am also a co-author on the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative\'s \"Advancing Racial Equity in University Foodservice Playbook.\" In Fall 2023, as a Congressional Intern in Representative Ro Khanna\'s (CA-17) district office, I assisted constituents with immigration casework including green cards, work permits, and asylum and refugee applications. From 2020 to 2023, I co-led unBox, a youth-led organization working to empower the next generation of leaders to fight US food insecurity. We created BayAreaCommunity.org, a mobile-friendly map helping low-income residents access school meals, contributed to the development of Sen. Durbin’s S.4202: Expanding SNAP Options Act of 2020, and created guides helping SNAP participants order groceries online for delivery, which through partnerships with Providers and Project Bread, were accessed times. I studied Chemical Engineering (B.S.\'23) at Stanford in order to gain a technical understanding of environmental justice issues, including air, water, and land contamination; renewable energy and battery technologies; critical metal and rare earth extraction and supply chains; pesticide runoff; and soil health. I then pursued a Masters of Science in Community Health and Prevention Research (\'23) to connect my understanding of environmental justice to public health.
