About Charlie Brummitt
I\'m an applied mathematician and data scientist interested in a wide variety of domains and in finding novel connections among them. My experience in academic research and industry ranges from machine learning to complex systems, economics, A.I, geospatial statistics, and natural language processing. I thrive in ambiguity and relish synthesizing information from different disciplines.Currently, I\'m focused on building the statistical underpinnings of a new carbon credit marketplace that rewards farmers and ranchers for sequestering carbon dioxide in soils. See the past, I did academic research on economics and complex systems:• Mathematical modeling:I develop, analyze, and empirically test mathematical models of the behavior of a large number of actors in social and economic systems, including— how people collaboratively innovate and create good ideas— how the financial system undergoes crises— how changes in behavior spread in a population— how fear and greed shape risk of electricity blackouts, and— how disruptions in supply chains affect economic development.• Machine learning, statistics, artificial intelligence:I apply statistical learning and natural language processing to economic and business contexts— Applied techniques in sparse regression, overcomplete libraries, and neural networks to predict and to identify mathematical laws in socioeconomic data— Collaborated on a randomized-controlled trial in Sub-Saharan Africa on how enhancing social networks improves the creation of business ideas. In this project, I developed a chat bot to incentivize people to give feedback to their peers and to acknowledge their contributions, and I used natural language processing (NLP) to get insights from chat data about what leads to successful groups and innovative business ideas.

Principal Data Scientist
Mar 2022 — Present · Boston, MA, US
I am continuing to develop Indigo\'s platform for monitoring, reporting, and verifications (MRV) of emissions reductions and removals in its carbon program. In addition to managing three data scientists, I contribute to the strategy and implementation of our quantification of offsets, uncertainty, reversals, permanence, and leakage. I also collaborate with the broader scientific and policy community to improve the rigor and trustworthiness of certificates for carbon sequestration and avoided emissions.
