Senior Manager - Audit People & Culture @BDO UK
My new role is to help shape and implement the people strategy — from talent development, and retention, to leadership support to reward and overall culture — so that our audit teams are engaged, capable, and set up to deliver high-quality work. It’s all about ensuring we have the right people, with the right skills and mindset, in the right environment, doing the right thing.

ABOUT CHARLOTTE COOPER
You never know what the future holds. As a young girl who despised maths, I couldn’t have predicted I would enjoy being an accountant. As a bright eyed graduate with First Class Honours in History and Philosophy I couldn’t have predicted I would find a new passion in auditing. And both of those journeys led me to my passion for Learning & Development. I have now been with BDO for circa 15 years and in that time have had some amazing experiences. For example, a six month secondment to BDO Australia, learning both new ways of working and how to thrive independently half way across the world from my family and friends. I have visited the Falkland Islands on many occasions, learning about the international fishing industry, and getting up close with thousands of penguins in the wild (getting somewhat less up close to the sea lions…). And, I was able to facilitate and lead a variety of learning events, pursuing my passion for developing others. The world of audit at BDO gave me a breadth of experience in terms of client base. From small owner managed businesses to large international groups; from single company small accounts to large complex consolidations. Within L&D I have had amazing opportunities to develop learning, facilitate in person (small rooms to large filmed stages), and virtually, evaluate and monitor learning as well as undertake learning needs analysis and focus on good governance. Through it all at the heart of all of this is putting our people first, for their success and the success of the firm. That variety is one of the things I really love about all of my roles at BDO. The other part is the people. It is a well quoted phrase that people don’t stay or leave companies for the company itself, it is who they work with day to day. There is a certain type of “BDO person” and it is hard to capture fully what that is in a pithy phrase – but it is evident when you work alongside them. I work with talented and thought provoking people every day. That gives me the opportunity to constantly develop and improve myself both personally and professionally – which is so rewarding. And what about me outside of the glamourous world of work? Well that is spent renovating our dream family cottage and fulfilling the most important role of all, being mum to Arlo.
