   OVERVIEW: Direct process and analytical development within the research and development department. Spearhead a diverse team of scientists and engineers responsible for analytical development, process development, technical optimization, bioprocess scale up, and analytical tech transfer. Oversee multimillion-dollar project budgets and grants for directly managed projects, ensuring functional support is available for project teams on a matrixed basis as needed. Oversaw the reengineering of K12 E. coli to produce record levels of recombinant proteins and nucleic acids that are stable, low in endotoxin, and purified ready for biopharmaceutical applications or transport into mammalian cells. SELECT HIGHLIGHTS:Principal Investigator: Vaccine-component Production in Bacterial Cells. Secured $12.8M in grant funding after writing five NIH SBIR grants, including fast-track, phase 2, and phase 2B-Managed cross-functional research team that developed platform for high yield production of three carrier proteins used in conjugate vaccine formulations-Helped develop unique methods for carrier protein expression during bioreactor production-Established protein purification methods with production team and directed final product formulationProject Leader: Novel Methods for Animal Vaccination. Launched $500K innovative research program, establishing a strategic partnership with an international animal health partner (Merial Animal Health) to develop a bacterial-based delivery system for animal vaccination-Negotiated research license, designed and oversaw proof-of-concept experiments in mammalian cells and vaccination studies in rodents-Spearheaded four international meetings between Scarab and Merial-Directed mammalian cell culture facility, including site setup, and contributed to US patent filing
