About Charles Johnson
I am a public historian, digital humanist, University professor and activist specializing in Public History in the Global African Diaspora at the community level. I am passionate about oral history, collaborative community-based participatory research, and creating transformative pathways to success.I have given lectures, presentations and held fireside chats on 3 continents and have appeared on television and radio broadcasts in the United States and abroad discussing the Black experience. I took my first steps as a digital humanist in 2001 when I co-authored a website with Dr. Joseph E. Harris on African American ties with Black South Africans during the anti-apartheid period. Since that time my work in this area has continued.I have co-authored a book, Topics in African Diaspora History (2016), in which I have several chapters on African Diaspora History. I have successfully directed seven M.A. theses since 2015 and have three former graduate students currently enrolled in doctoral programs. Two others are working as public historians and one is applying to law school. I have partnered on multiple funded research projects including with colleagues at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the North Carolina African American Heritage Association, Duke University, the Braggtown Community Association, and DurhamCares.I have cultivated active and engaging community relationships, partnerships, or projects with African American communities throughout Durham including Braggtown, Brookstown, College Heights, East End, Emorywood Estates, Merrick Moore, Wall Town, and the West End.
