About Chaofan Shi

With a solid background in cloud-based system architecture, my professional journey has been marked by spearheading crucial projects that enhance operational efficiency and compliance. At Google, my leadership in revamping the second party detectors integration system significantly increased our release frequency, directly impacting team productivity. My technical proficiencies have been instrumental in developing compliant systems across multiple jurisdictions and pioneering a re-architecture for the GCP Rapid Vulnerability Detection system. This expertise not only unblocked key customers but also reinforced our commitment to providing secure, scalable cloud solutions.

Experience

  1. Software Engineer

    Google

Aug 2019 — Present · Kirkland, WA, US

GCP Security Command Center- Currently re-architecturing batch processing data pipeline (average processing 250 million records) into micro services expecting lowing the latency from 6 hours to within 10 mins in real-time- Led team of 3 to revamp the monolithic vulnerability integration system into micro services which handles 300k qps at peak with p95 2 ms latency, it also largely improved the team operation efficiency- Owned the initiative to make ingestion system being in compliance with EU/US/Saudi Arabia regulations with a challenging timeline. This allows our product to continue to operate in the those jurisdictional regions.GCP Rapid Vulnerability Detection- Re-architectured the system from a multi-tenant system to a multi single-tenant product and implemented the new design independently. It unblocked the top 5 customers from running detection in their private VPC network, and secured the traffic by isolating the workloads- Designed and implemented the on-demand detectors parts of this product, this was the showcase example of combining Google internal infrastructure and GCP products- Built brand new plug-in detector for log4j 0-day vulnerability within 2 days after the vulnerability was published, it attracted more than 100 corporate customers to onboard this product.GCP Web Security Scanner- Led the reliability engineering excellence initiative (trimmed tech-debt backlog and lead disaster recovery test) after a couple of outages across Google. Resolved all the P1 SLO violations, reduced P2 SLO violations by 60%, increased test code coverage to 96%- Owned the migration of the Data access layer as ramp up project. It unblocked the separation of GCP. This was a key milestone to move the service from Appengine Platform to internal infrastructure. It was challenging due to the missing functionalities in the newer library, I had to implement them myself including the transaction management.
