About Chantal Kerssens
Chantal co-founded Friendi.fi after leading R&D at care.coach and other digital health startups. She is the Principal Investigator and Program Director on 4 large awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), totaling more than $10MM in non-dilutive funding for bringing safe and effective AI solutions to people with complex chronic health conditions and disabilities. Raised in a home with serious mental illness, and a mom to a child with disabilities, Chantal clearly sees the potential and limits of tech in everyday life. She embraces universal design principles, by which solutions are developed with, not for, people and communities. She led the Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation (CIDI) at the Georgia Institute of Technology as its inaugural Executive Director, and has been a long-standing member of Small Business Innovation and Tech Transfer (SBIR/STTR) grant review panels at the NIH with a focus on biobehavioral processes, risk prevention, and health behavior. Chantal trained as an experimental-cognitive psychologist (MSc, PhD) in her native country, the Netherlands, where her early forays in the medical field landed publications and featured editorials in top-tier medical specialty journals. A faculty position in the United States transformed into a fortuitous introduction to the US startup ecosystem, which she has not left since. Chantal’s the inventor behind several patents and specializes in tech design for people with normal and abnormal age-related cognitive decline.
