May 8th, 2014. Radio City Music Hall, New York City. The 79th annual NFL Draft. After 7 rounds came and went, my phone was still as dry as the Sahara and it became painstakingly obvious that nobody was willing to take a flyer on a severely undersized and extremely mediocre offensive lineman (*disclaimer: I had a 0.00% chance and the thought of me trying to block Aaron Donald in a non-video game setting is laughable). As reality set in, I realized I’d need to find something else to do for a living where my “dad bod” and 5.4 second 40-yard dash (think fast, run fast) wouldn’t limit my ability to compete. Not ready to fully give up on sports, I took a job in the sports performance industry where I had the opportunity to train some professional athletes from the NFL, NHL, and MLB. I learned a lot from this experience, perhaps most importantly that genetic limitations are, in fact, a very real thing and no matter how hard I worked in the gym, I’d still look like Eli Manning as Chad Powers whenever I ran. This quickly put to bed any remaining what-ifs in the back of my mind and I was able to close the book on my athletic career with “no ragrets” (shoutout to Scottie P). Looking back on my pipe dream of playing in the NFL, I think what I really desired more than fame and fortune, as cliché as it may sound, was to be in a position where I could positively impact others. Fortunately, I’ve managed to find that in my role here at Four Quadrants (and as an added bonus - with a much lower risk of concussions).
