Growing up an athlete, after 19 years of coaching High School Basketball, Working in Sales, and owning a business, here are my top traits that will set you apart from the pack in Sports, Sales and Life! Skill may GET you there but these will KEEP you there! Attitude- Bringing a good attitude to the job is a must if you want to enjoy the ride! Effort- A strong work ethic will over come a ton of your shortcomings In terms of skill. Gratitude- Having an attitude of gratitude will eliminate selfishness and change your perspective in a positive way. Eliminate the fluff- Do what matters! I’ve seen coaches do a million drills that don’t matter. Focus on WHAT WINS! Skill- Having the skills to get the job done matter, work on them daily! IQ- Understanding the game! Be a student of the game or craft and know it like the back of your hand. Energy and Motor- People gravitate towards you if you are energetic. Having a “motor” will beat skill alone 99% of the time. Discipline- Running stadiums at 5 am is hard, eating healthy is hard, saying no to temporary fun is hard, winning is hard…. being out of shape is hard, being broke is hard, losing is hard….choose your hard. The Skill gap gets smaller and smaller the further you level up, In College Basketball everyone can dribble, pass and shoot at a high level. In the business world everyone can close a sale. So what’s going to separate you in the long term? I believe these traits will keep you on top and separate you when everything else is on a level playing field! CREATE THE WAVE!
