ABOUT CHAD HAINES

I am a cultural anthropologist, professor of religious studies, and co-director of ASU\'s Center of Muslim Experience in the United States. As an educator and researcher, I am deeply concerned with how informal social practices transform and transcend the complexities of our modern world, creating the foundations of lived peace. My research, teaching, and activism focus on human resilience and our capacity to forge sustainable, dynamic, and humane social relations, with a particular focus on complex urban environments.My areas of expertise include Islam, the Muslim world, urbanism, everyday ethics, globalization, modernity, Pakistan, Egypt, and sustainable development. Currently, I am developing the new Center of Muslim Experience in the US and conducting research on religious and ethnic minorities across South Asia that is funded by the National Endowment of Humanities. Previously, I was the Principle Investigator for a collaborative partnership between Arizona State University and the University of the Punjab, Lahore, funded by the US Department of State. I give regular talks on urbanism, Muslim politics, American Islamophobia, minorities in South Asia, and everyday peace. I also organize and conduct professional development workshops at universities across the world.My publications include: Muslim Modernities: Urban Planning, Informality, and Religion in Cairo, Islamabad, and Dubai (forthcoming); Nation, Territory and Globalization in Pakistan: Traversing the Margins (Routledge, 2012) and am co-editor of Women and Peace in the Islamic World: Gender, Agency, and Influence (I.B. Tauris, 2015), People\'s Peace: Prospects for a Human Future (Syracuse University Press, 2019), and On Othering: Processes and Politics of Unpeace (Athabasca University Press, forthcoming).
