ABOUT CETA RAMKHALAWANSINGH

Ceta is and has been a volunteer, city builder, feminist, student, university lecturer, researcher, human rights advocate, publisher, student leader, public servant, city councillor. Ceta was born in Trinidad and Tobago. During Canada\'s Centennial year, her family moved to Toronto where she attended high school at Riverdale Collegiate, building upon the excellent foundation laid by St. Augustine Girls High School. From 1981 to retirement in 2010, she worked at Toronto City Hall. She worked with others to introduce ground-breaking equity, human rights and social justice policies and programs. Before City Hall, Ceta was a lecturer in Women’s Studies and worked with Toronto school trustees to develop multicultural policies. Ceta was appointed by Toronto City Council in 2014 to fill a vacancy as Ward 20 Councillor Trinity Spadina. Currently, she is the President, LEARNXS Foundation, board member Toronto Foundation and Campbell House Foundation. At UT, Ceta is Board Chair, Harold Innis Foundation, Innis College. She is a Member of Massey College\'s Quadrangle Society and has represented New College on the College of Electors. In the Grange neighbourhood, she works on social housing, heritage conservation, park revitalization and land use, and is Hon. President, Grange Community Association. She served as President, MATCH International Fund (now Equality Fund); President, Grange Area Co-op; Vice President, YWCA TO; Board Chair, Cecil Community Centre, and the boards of University Settlement, The Word On The Street, Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, Couchiching Institute on Public Policy, Friends of Fort York, Diaspora Dialogues, etc. Ceta was on the writing collective of Women at Work: Ontario 18••••30, co-winner of the City of Toronto’s Book Award (1974). She received the LEAF/WIN Person’s Day Award (1994), the New Pioneers Award University of Toronto Arbor Award (2001), Constance E Hamilton Award on the Status of Women from the City of Toronto (2012), YWCA Toronto Woman of Distinction in 2017 for Public Service and Social Justice. Desi Community Achievers Award (2008). In 2002, she was appointed as an Honorary Member, Institute of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies, recognizing her role as a co-founder of Women’s Studies, University of Toronto. Ceta has contributed to several books and journals. Her academic qualifications include a BA, MA, graduate diplomas in Child Studies and completed residency requirement towards a PhD at OISE, UT.
